No, I am not at all sure it is a gitane - I thought it may be due to its having pegs to carry a frame pump, which in conjunction with the French components and cranks made me think it was a hosteler.

I *think* this is an old gitane Hosteler, primarily because of the frame pump pegs on the top bar. Huret derailers (a svelto on the rear) with Adrupat Universel cottered cranks.
