i have bought some simplex friction shifters on e bay new old stock
they are braze on fitting but have a wing nut centre bolt (like campag)
fitting as opposed to a centre bolt. i cant find any listed on velobase
just wondered if anyone knows what model they are
no photos at minute but can post some . the levers are not stamped simplex but the lever centre caps are.

Bowser,
Can you post the link to the eBay auction? Need to see some kind of photo to see if we can help you.

Bowser,

I've never encountered this style.

That "D" ring style outer nut was used on a Simplex shifter model dating from 1984 (see photo). The shifters you show do not show up in that catalog.

Out of curiosity, are the levers alloy or steel (magnetic)?

Better photos with detail may help, especially of the Simplex markings.

Jay

I've seen a reference to those levers and pictures of them on a few mid level French bikes but never up close.

It looks like they used the Simplex Retrofriction lever design but are straight friction without the Retrofriction mechanism.

My 1979 Bertin has what was probably the last generation of the plastic caped alloy levers that came out in the late 60s for use with the Criterium derailleurs. They have "aerodynamic" plastic wingnuts!

I would think that your levers may be a replacement for this style.

Your levers should fit on standard brazed on mounts.

Bowser,
I made a mistake. The shifters you have are shown in the 1984 Simplex catalog. Model SJ 6311. Go to the Velobase web site, 3/4 down the home page is a link to "Catalog Scans". Click and then go down to the 1984 Simplex .zip file. After download go to "scan0008" which is page 9. You will find the shifters there.

Actually, I guess you would have the lower ones on that page for braze on mount, SJ 6320 & 6321.

Initially I thought those might be like the ones I have on my '84 TdF - but now I'm not so sure. The ones I have a great, smooth feel to them.

These are the "retro friction" version in your photo. Bowser has the "friction" model.

hi jay
thanks for the info they certainly look like the 6320/1 levers
but with the d wing nut. i also have the sja 222 braze on ft mech
so looks like they match have fitted them to the team pro frame
and they work fine although i should really have the retro friction shifters
its still a work in progress though so maybe in the future
cheers
