Bowser,
I doubt that it's actually gold in finish. The item looks to me to have been taken on an exposure without a blue filter/white balance under standard bulb lighting, hence the yellow/gold tinge. The gold/yellow tinge on the green background also points to a lighting issue. It wouldn't show in this way if the item was actually gold in colour.
The seller appears to possibly have a similar exposure issue with other items they're selling, unless I'm completely wrong and they are actually gold in colour/finish. It might be worth checking with the seller for absolute peace of mind as this is just my thought.
Nice item even so.

The derailleur is stamped 1982 and as Gtane mentioned I don't think it's gold anodized either, it's just the lighting.
Simplex marketed under both the Sipdel group name and their own label. They also made derailleurs for several other marques including Gipiemme and Edco.
Also, I've never seen drillium on any standard Simplex derailleur. |

Bowser,
This listing appears to be the SLJ 5500 with Spidel labeling. I have one of these on my PY 10 CP shown below.
And while the drillium of the cage may be after market, it is possible that it was factory done as indicated in this link.
http://www.velo-pages.com/main.php?g2_itemId=29286
Granted this is a different derailleur, but it may be possible that the eBay listing was factory done also. Who knows what was going on with the European versions. Obviously factory drilling was rare and not readily available.
At GBP 20.00 it was a very fair price even with the condition issues.

Bowser,
Yes, there are several software bidding programs that can be used. It's nice for a number of reasons.
1. You don't have to place an opening bid at all, unless you want to or think that a seller might end the auction early.
2. You set your highest price and forget it, so that if you are at work or asleep it triggers automatically in the last 1-5 seconds.
3. While there is a tiny fee (well worth it) if you win, you are not charged if you don't.
4. It bids at the auction increment. (if the last bid is $20, the increment $1, and you set $30, you win at $21).
I've lost some and won some (sometimes for much less than my maximum).

Bowser,
Here's a Simplex Prestige rear changer finished in the colour gold that's currently for sale - http://tinyurl.com/37gps3k
The seller also has other Simplex Prestige items finished in gold.
No connection.

I'm not sure that Prestige is the proper terminology for these derailleurs?? |

Chas,
It's listed on Velobase as the 'Simplex SLJ 5000' and as being part of the Super LJ group but without reference to the Prestige name - http://tinyurl.com/38gfcxg
From a quick search on the internet, most references to the changer list and show it without the Prestige name, so your note ties in.

In the early 60s when Simplex first introduced the DelrinŽ plastic derailleurs they exchanged the model names Criterium and Prestige for their various models several different times.
By the late 60s Criterium was their top model and Prestige was their economy model.
In the early 70s Simplex brought out their Super LJ alloy derailleurs. After that they used SLJ, LJ, SA, SX and so on with numbers indicating the quality level.
Simplex model nomenclature was/is confusing even for experts and serious collectors.
Also I've frequently found eBay sellers who try to make it sound like they're experts on the goods they're offering when many times they were wearing "nappies" when their goods were being produced! |

Chas,
Thanks for that.
I agree with you about sellers professing to know about the items they sell. A classic area of confusion are the Records, Nuovo Records, Super Records and Gran Sports.

While it's not properly the "Prestige" derailleur, I believe the confusion of sellers comes from the fact that on the back plate many are printed with "Prestige-Simplex. All of my "Criteriums" and my SLJ 5500 have this. They don't take the time to research the proper model through online catalogs or Velo-Base.
I've learned to ignore the "prestige" description and go by the photo of the offering.

Jay and Chas,
Simplex is not a brand with which I am particularly familiar so thank you for the detail. The photo of the back plate of this particular rear changer appears to have 'Prestige-Simplex' as you describe, Jay.

Tim,
Maybe Lucien Juy considered all of them "Prestigious".
