just picked up this frame from france but am puzzled as to the make. it came with campag bb and headset, vitus dropouts, reynolds 531 tubes, 501 forks. i took it to the lbs and he put in a 26.2 seatpost, however the bolt is pinched together, id reynolds supposed to be 27.2? would a pinced seattube make up for the lost 1mm? i also found some links to a few gitanes which look pretty similar to whatever my frame is ie lugs, dropouts etc
it has a 'g' on the headtube but i cant read the decals on the downtube.

and these triangle shapes at the lugs
any ideas?

that is the downtube logo, i went over it with a sharpie to make the edges for obvios so i could read it, giordana maybe? and i found this

i have posted this in bikeforms and an aussie forum bicycles.net with no luck, hopefully you guys can help.

Need more pictures. Detail of the bottom bracket, rear brake bridge, front view of the fork dropouts, and the rear dropouts. Also, what type of threading on the bottom bracket?

And no, not all Reynolds frames were 27.2...

Looks like a Gitane to me. The seat-post binder bolt, brake bridge, and dropouts appear to be Gitane. It is a mid-1980's model...not sure about the tubing though, because I don't think the tubing sticker is original (of course, it is hard to make out in the pics). It has a vitus cable guide, right?

The seatpost should be 26.4 or 26.6...obviously not 26.2...not 27.2.

The question is...what model frame do you have there? The fact that the chain stay isn't chromed starts to narrow it down, as does the internally routed rear brake cable....

the sticker on the seat tube seems older than the fork sticker. is it possible the frame might be vitus tubing of some sort? i should weigh the frame bare, but that would mean taking it apart again.....

That can't be the right decal....

Look at the down tube closely, right around the shift levers. Really study the paint there, and you may be able to see "Reynolds" stamped into the tubing. Gitane didn't file or fill that, and the paint was so thin, you can see it on many framesets.

Another question: Are the lug angle stamps visible? Gitane didn't file/fill those either.

i couldnt see any 'reynolds' engraved anywhere. the seat and headtube angle are 72, the downtube angle 62. and bcm seems to be on some of the lugs

That has to be a Gitane...such a poor finish is standard fare!
