Love these bikes! I just bought a 72 tour de france and would like to install a new bottom bracket. The current one works, but protrudes slightly (wrong size?). What was the specs on the original and is it currently avail from VeloOrange?
Any advice would be great, as I plan on riding this bike forever. The frame is amazing and I now understand why Gitane's have such a devoted following. |

French Bottom Bracket shells are 68mm wide with M35x1 Right Hand Metric threads on both sides. There have been a few instances of Gitanes from the mid 1970s with British threaded BBs and headsets but most mere metric.
The original TdFs came with Stronglight model 93 cranks. Usually with 52-42T chainrings.
There were no numbers on the BB cups. The right hand side fixed cup had 8 flats and a single groove or ring machined into the face of the cup. These were usually polished chrome plated. The Left hand adjustable cup had a hex for tightening and loosening. Sometimes the LH adjustable cup was zinc or cadmium plated instead on chrome.
The original spindles were gray or black, 118mm overall length with 118 stamped in them along with Stronglight.
Stronglight 49 cranks used the same bottom bracket. Since yours is probably a replacement, there is no telling what kind of bottom bracket was used without disassembly.
From around 1973 through 1974 Gitane switched to Sugino Mighty Competition cranks on the Tour de France models.
It was the peak of the Bike Boom. Peugeot and Raleigh used Stronglight 93 cranks on several of their models. They probably had more juice with Stronglight than Gitane which resulted in supply problems. Either that or Sugino made Gitane a deal they couldn't refuse.
These Sugino cranks were probably the first knockoff Campy cranks on the market. They had the same dimensions and interchanged with Campy cranks.
The cups were either satin or bright chrome plated and had SUGINO 35 x 1.0 MADE IN JAPAN stamped into them. They were the thin style cups without the reverse riffling grooves in the spindle holes that thick style campy cups had.
The Sugino spindles were the same dimensions as the early style Campy NR, 113mm overall length.
Without additional information it's difficult to make any suggestions. |
