I have not taken very good care of the frame--it's in a closet right now, a bit rusty around the edges. Most of the paint and decals are in decent shape. I have the old nuovo record gruppo, and want to rebuild it. My question: is there a place that re-paints and re-decals these vintage frames? |

There are a lot of places that do...the question is how much do you want to spend? |

Price is not a big object, although I don't want to spend my life savings or anything. Can you tell me about some of the shops/people that might do this, and how to get in touch with them? Thanks for the help! |

89,
It would also be a help if we know where you live. East Coast, Left Coast. or ??? What model? Do you have photos? It may just need a good cleaning and touch up.

Agreed, Cyclart is a well known "restorer". I have several problems with their work... I can usually spot one of their paint jobs from 20 feet away - they tend to use too much clearcoat which covers up the fine details of hand filed lugs and other features.
They can apply thinner less glossy clearcoat on request.
My second complaint is they've tended to take a lot of 'artistic license" on their reproduction decals.
A full restoration can get pretty expensive. Figure on the following costs for the frame alone:
Chrome replating $200 to $500+
Repainting $200 to $600+
Replacement decals $40 to $100+
As Jay pointed out, it depends a lot on where you live and who you select to do the work.
The last painter that I recommended took over 2 years to repaint several frames for one of our Forum members so I'm reluctant to make any suggestions.
There's a number of restorers/painters on this list from the Classic Rendezvous website (scroll down):
http://www.classicrendezvous.com/ClassicRe.htm
Here's another list of frame builders. Some of them will do repainting too:

I've got a guy in a body shop I work with who has offered a great deal:
They have a large amount of mixed paint from jobs they've done in the past in various colors that are just sitting around in his paint room. All I'd need to do is go in with my stripped and ready to go bike frame and they'd prime it in the paint booth while they're spraying a car, spray the paint that I choose and then clear it (while they are clearing a car also) over decals, etc.
Too good of a deal - figure I'd be into it less than $100. |

Here are some pics. It's not in bad shape, but it's rusting, it's chipped and scratched, and the decals are wearing off. I've also got the forks, which are chrome--although I don't think the Renault team raced with chrome forks. And, I'm in Dallas, if that helps with refurb options. Thanks!

Sorry, having trouble getting these pics to post. Any tips? I've tried different download sizes, etc. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, as only the post-image url shows up. |

89greg,
When posting images use the 'Add image to post' link directly underneath the bottom left corner of the text box but first place the cursor where you want that image to appear within the body of your message.
Nice frame by the way and I really like the Campagnolo sticker on the top tube. Stephan (site owner and administrator) mentioned not to long ago that transfers for this particular age of machine were not available. This might still be true.
The frame actually looks to be in great original condition. Does it have a story to tell?
Would it be possible for you to post further shots of the frame for the marque experts - lugs, bottom bracket, transfers, cable guides, etc?
Thanks for posting
Tim |

Not sure if that worked. I'm positioning the cursor, clicking on the "add image link", sizing it for website/email--but all I see are the url's--no pics.
The story behind the frame: I happened into a small bike shop in Dallas in 1985. This frame was built up with Nuovo Record. It was my size, and it caught my eye because it was the first Gitane I had ever seen in person after seeing the frames in bike racing mags for years. The entire bike was about $900--steep back then for a college student--but I got together what I could and bought it. I raced it for about 7 or 8 years. It was an awesome racing frame. Since then, it's been in the garage closet. Now, I'm thinking about trying to restore it to near-original condition. |
