Nice bike - but something just doesn't look right with those decals.

Lofter and I have been discussing this machine (among others) on Chas' Gitanes on Ebay thread ( http://www.gitaneusa.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1730&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 ) and Lofter says that it's a resprayed '83. So good thoughts on a date, Bowser.

Nice looking machine.

Tim

hi sorry i didnt pick up on your thread . i would say definetly had a re spray at some point . the down tube decals look like they are wrong!
maybe the rear chrome stay has been painted over.?
did a "google" on ian binder who is mentioned he was a pro from 82 to 89
various teams but no mention of gitane. looks mainly original apart from the wheels of course .bars and stem look later. also looks bigger than 21" as listed.

The Columbus decal on the seat tube says Respray.

Thanks Chas, I've never a Columbus respray transfer before. So that's what one looks like.

Is the respray detail in the diagonal red tram lines? It's a little out of focus for me to see the detail fully although I can just make out the last few letters. Looks like it could be in Italian.

3.

Yes, it's in the diagonal red stripes. I'll post a picture when I get home at the end of the week.

Seller says that it's a late 70s bike but Gitane didn't start using fastback "shot in' seat stays until after 1980.

Reynolds Respray decals (click on picture to se the full spread)

Before all of the repop Reynolds replica decals became available these were only meted out to approved refinishers.

Thanks very much indeed Chas, it's good to see the detail on the Columbus transfer.

Good to see the Reynolds family of respray transfers and I'm familiar with those.

I remember very well in trying to obtain a genuine non respray Reynolds 531 transfer after a respray in the 1980s and it was simply impossible.
