Here's a 1962 Gitane Competition with Nervex Pro lugs (not mine, pictures lifted from the internet). This 1966 Gitane catalog page lists Nervex lugs on the Tour de France model and Prugnat lugs on the then Top of the line Competition model. http://www.gitaneusa.com/images/catalog/us1960_pg1.jpg The Prugnat S4 long point lugs were referred to in some Gitane literature as "Italian Style" even though they were French made. Nervex Professional lugs were at one time considered a mark of a top quality bike. During the bike boom era of the early 70s they found their way onto a LOT of cheap entry level European bikes. Like Simplex plastic derailleurs, Nervex Professional lugs became a symbol of frumpy old school bikes. At that time most manufactures wanted to emulate the look of the top Italian bikes with long point lugs especially on their better models. Most manufactures make what sells!
