Hey everyone,
I'm a little new here but dig the site. I recently picked up an old Gitane 600 at a yard sale, I think it is a '75 or '76 model. Its a cherry but needs some work. It has Shimano 600 derailleurs, weinmann 610 center pull brakes all of which are in good condition. The only problem is I want to update the pedals but can not find anything that fits. The local shop said I could tap it out but I would rather not. Any ideas or advice that would make life easier would be appreciated.

I'll update with more progress
Cheers

What kind of pedals are you looking for?

About 30 years ago metric threaded pedals fell victim to the ISO's head long rush to adopt a modified version on the obsolete British bicycle thread system for pedals, bottom brackets, headsets, freewheels and rear hubs.

That was at a time when they had just standardized most of the world on the ISO metric thread standards! Three countries are not metric standard: the US, Liberia on the west coast of Africa and Burma!

End of rant! Evil or Very Mad

Metric pedal threads are 14mm x 1.25mm

British pedal threads are 9/16" x 20 TPI

14mm = .551"
9/16" = .5625" or 14.29mm

1.25 Pitch is almost identical to 20 TPI (Threads Per Inch).

14mm is .29mm or 0.011" smaller than 9/16" so not much material is removed.

Find a shop with a SHARP set of pedal taps and someone who knows how to use them. They also need some tapping compound for aluminum and the job is easy.

Dull taps which are what you will find at most shops and the wrong tapping fluid or worse, none at all makes for a hard job.

I was hoping to find some basic cage style road pedals that were a little lighter/cleaner looking. Is there any place that you know of that still sales the metric pedals for a reasonable price? I don't really want to tap out the crank if I don't have to. I know its silly but it sort of has a nostalgia about it.
Also, any ideas what the seat post size is for this guy? The owner before had stuffed a 26mm in the tube, which has warped it slightly. I am pretty sure that I am going to need to ream it out to make it straight again. My best guess is that it is around 25mm??
Thanks for getting back so quick
