Gitane Mondial - help?

Hello,

New here, hoping to learn a little more about my Gitane Mondial. I have done numerous google searches for this model Gitane and there appears to be no record of it on the web.

It's a forest green with yellow stickers reading Cycles Gitane and Mondial. Frame tubes are Reynolds 453. Bike came outfitted with elaborate 'constructeur' style racks, both front and rear, fenders and a Soubitez generator mounted under the bottom bracket. Generator cable runs inside of the down tube and fenders - well planned! Components were all french; Simplex, Belleri, Mafac, Ideale, Maillard, Lyotard, Stronglight. All threads are british.

To my limited knowledge Gitane is not known for making loaded touring/camping bikes. Anybody have a clue as to what this bike is all about?

Oh, I should mention that I have two of them.

Amazing! Thank you.

Mine is a bit different, notably the dropouts not being the Gitane style and the seat stays are brazed to the sides of seat lug.

Anyone know more about this model?

Can you post some photos of your bike please?

The forum members are good at identifying bikes but sometimes our powers of long range perception are not very good! Wink

Great bike... bought mine in Nuremburg Germany around 1985 and toured around most of Germany and a lot of France with it.... I still have it but it's packed away in the barn... I'm going to have to dig her out this summer.
Cheers!!!

P.S. Is it possible to post some images that demonstrate the position and mounting of the roller dynamo under-behind the bottom bracket---I think that is a neat piece of engineering.

Judging from the decals, it's a 1985-86 model.

I've seen a lot of conflicting information about Reynolds 453 tubing, everything from titanium (not likely) to total BS.

Thanks for your estimate. I dated it after an 86 catalogue I found in the web.

Regarding the components I would have guessed it to be older than 86 too.
