This probably sounds like a simple question but from what little I've learned about Gitane so far, I know it's probably not.
Anyway, from what I've read, I'm under the impression that anything with a brake bridge (pre '75?) came with Mafac - whether Racers or Competitions, and those without the bridge came with Campagnolo.
I suppose that after they eliminated the bridge everything went to Campy side-pulls - but how about Universals? I have a later ('76) bridge-less frame that came with Super-68's, but I have no way of knowing if these were original. |

My all original, as spec'd, 1976 TdF came with Mafac Competition (2nd generation) center pull brakes. They used the cable hanger off of the seat post bolt.

Here's mine...
Very few of these were imported to the US that year.

That's a lovely bike, Jay. - And thanks for your input:
It's clear now that they were still using Mafac Comp's even after the elimination of the brake bridge, by merit of the hanger on the seat clincher.
Mine has the same rear dropout as yours BTW, so I'm pretty sure our bikes are contemporary, and so probably the Universal Super 68's on it are unoriginal. |
