Could this predate the 1960's? Or perhaps not so high end? I have a low mid-end (can you have one of those) late 60's French bike that has a single shifter braze on for the rear. When I was tearing it down to rebuild I saw the clamp for the shifter and figured it was like any other clamp on downtube shifters. I was surprised to see the braze on. The clamp had the left side shifter and then an opening on the right side that fit over the braze on. These didn't need a left hand shift lever on the down tube. Also, some bikes only came with rear derailleurs and used 3, 4 or 5 speed freewheels. _________________ Chas.
