I'm going to try to build a beauty of a daily road/city rider out of this bike. I'd love to know (near'bouts) the year of the bike.
I'd also love to hear (if anyone has an idea) a few ideas about upgrades.
Crank and/or Pedals - Fenders - Lights & Stem.
Those are my initial 'wonders'. Any help out there? Thanks and thanks for having me!

I wouldn't touch it except for tubes/tires and washdown with WD40. Some grease and oil and perhaps some of the cables. Make sure everything is tight and it will last another 40 years which is roughly how old it is.

She needs tubes / tires and I don't even know the size of the wheelset(s) - I'm VERY new to all of this. The Fenders are dented and I'm not sure I would be able to fix that, so I wander about replacing them (would also need sizes). I need lights (I live in Venice, near L.A.. Big city, too many cars and I ride a lot before and after dark. I'd lock to get something on there that fits/suits the overall aesthetic (no real reason, I'm just like that).
The Stem stays (I'm 6 foot 1 and was a little worried about my stance on the bike, but I'll live) The Seat (probably) stays. Why not, right? The pedals absolutely HAVE to go. Must. Really.
Anyone have any idea of the year and/or specs of my newly beloved mixte? |

Hard to determine the exact year, but it is a late 1960's, early 1970's. As for the "Specs", go to the catalogue section of the GitaneUSA.com site...look at the 1970 US Catalogue. It's in there.
The wheels should be 27x1. Easy to find in your local bike shop. And if the fenders are dented...they don't need to be replaced unless they are rubbing on the tires, in which case...just bend them back! |

Why would you replace the pedals???
The only thing I would replace on that bike is the saddle. That ass-hatchet will kill you. Buy a Brooks saddle and call it a day. |

I guess you're right about the fenders... They aren't rubbing at all. I'll probably just put them back on as-is (for now  ). The seat/saddle doesn't bother me much, it's in really good shape and I stand most of the time (which is also why I was worried about the pedals)... I do love her so, I'm off to look at the 1970 Catalog(ue) you mentioned! Thanks again and see you in here again soon!
