I have to admit I have never really liked gitanes! I usually post on bikeforums but thought you guys might like to see this.
I brought this yesterday here in france, I was hoping someone help me find a catalog picture to help with my restoration. The reynolds sticker is the french repainted sticker, what was the original?
I am guessing from the slj components that the bike is later that 80, but the rear brake cable routing went internal in 83 / 84? So I am guessing 81 / 82
Headset = Mitch
Bar stem = mavic
cranks = spidel 106
wheels = spidel / mavic gp4 / tubulars 84
Front derailleur = simplex brazed on
Rear derailleur = Simplex SLJ 6600
seat/post = Turbo (no date code) slj post
Reynolds reemaillage = repainted?

The bike is 60cm, which is the size I collect so this will be restored and kept.
The man selling the bike was a odd job worker and told me a quick history of the bike. He works for a rich man who apparently buy's things then leaves them in corners. The original owner gave the bike to the odd job worker to ride, but he said there's no way I can ride it so he said he would sell it and keep the cash. |

Gitane only used that style of decal for a few years, 1984 with some overlap in 1983 and 1985.
1983 Team Pro from French catalog.
1983 Team Pro ad with Fignon riding.
1984 Team Pro from US catalog.
They also used those decals on the 1987 Team Pro model, picture from th US catalog.
In the US these were available as complete bikes or bare frames. The 1983-84 US Team Pro frames used Columbus tubing. The 1987 Team Pro used Reynolds 531P Professional tubing.

Your bike has Reynolds reemaillage decals indicating that it's been repainted.
It also has earlier style seat stay attachments. From 1984 on Gitane used fast back seat stays on their better models.
It's most likely as you noted, an earlier 80s model with updated components and decals from the mid 80s. |
