Just released !
http://www.amazon.fr/Dans-secrets-du-Tour-France/dp/2246788226/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1340551953&sr=8-1
He writes about how Gitane beneficiated from the Renault structures in terms of design, aerodynamics, etc... of which the Gitane president grew jealous of. Because before Renault, the team was just "Gitane" and now all the credit was given to Renault. Guimard also suggests that Gitane president (he's not giving his name, or I missed it) helped Hinault become independant (which lead to Hinault leaving the team).
He also says he was offered to run the F1 team in 1985 and soon after he refused, Renault ended both the F1 and cycling team.
After that he describes how Gitane was let down by Renault, the sales departement regretting they couldn't offer signed pictures of riders anymore to help the sales going up.
page 231 : "(...)Whatever happened to the Gitane brand after that ? Not much. It was a long and slow crash, until Renault split. What if Renault had kept this great bike brand ? Don't you think they'd have made a profit now, given that there are more bike sales now than there ever was ?
That was a catastrophic decision. A national trauma.(...)" |
