Got my first Gitane last week. After a quick fix, this wednesday it was out for its first ride in about 10 years. Its an old Olympic 1863. At least thats what I make of it when I have a look at the photos from the online catalogue.

My question is what kind of information could the frame numbers give me? The numbers are 309- 51523 8- 721. Not sure what the different numbers are about.

Would be grateful for all response made towards my question.

We have tried, to no avail, to make sense of Gitane's numbering system. Only for a few years in the early 1980's did they make any sense.

Greetings,

My guess is that you have a late 1970s Tour de France or similar model, maybe a European only version.

The Olympic bikes were all Campagnolo equipped and had all Reynolds 531 frames.

The Reynolds decal on your frame indicates that it's made with only the 3 main tube made of Reynolds 531.

It should be a nice riding and handling bike.
