CAn you measure the length of the Systeme U stripes? The maker needs the exact measurements. Also, a close up picture of those stripes (only the ones on the down tube).
The maker already has the ability to make the "Cycles Gitane" part, just need the detail of the (1) Downtube Stripes and (2) Head Tube decal. |

The '85/'86 Professionnel is an all time favorite. One that got away. $889.00 U.S., only, for a Gitane with a 531c frameset and a Victory groupset. If a nice 57-58 cm. Professionnel were to appear (miraculously)!, what a great addition that would be!

I owned one of those in a 60.
No fan of the decal of course....and I kinda doubt that Trek flipped as many as 1000 of these complete bikes across all the sizes too.
I think I got the bare frame for $275 or so which was an absurd value now that Rossins and the like were selling for $550-$600 through the LBS. I had poached that really light Spidel seatpost from one of the previous Supercorsas and with mostly pre-indexing Superbe equipment my stuff was as light as anything on the road back then but for the Vitus 979s.
Versus a 62 CM TDF, a 52 CM Supercorsa (still own) and a 61 CM TDF that I sold, all of same approximate vintage; I would be quite inclined to agree with this statement quoted above. The (Trek) Professionnels were certainly finished and painted better and the 531 C was a better tubeset in my size though not all much heavier than Vitus 983.
Not the least because Gitane had had a sizing hole between 57 and 61, the year before that 62, Centimeters on the early 1980s English threaded production bikes.
(PS. I'm certain that your dream bike came in even number Center to Top increments only.)
With 531 C Reynolds finally gets the oval fork blade right, I think Gitane even used the same crown as the previous Vitus tube bikes.
Insofar as I have broken three Campy 1010B rear dropouts but ZERO Atelier dropouts, plus I sold the 61 CM TDF to someone bigger and heavier than myself and he hasn't either-then I have to say that these really ARE sleeper bikes and it's no surprise at all that this board went nuts over the sample with Euro plumage.
Never forget that by 1987 you are within 3-5 years of the point where they just stop making production lugged steel frames everywhere. With 531C you are right up against as good as steel ever got in the standard diameters and intended for brazing. (That's right I'm calling 653 and 753 boutique products and if the frame is in my size then it better not be "used" very much as well. The old timers at Trek still say that 753 was as tricky as anything they ever worked with there.)
I'm becoming fond of the higher end Japanese production frames from this period for a lot of the same reasons. Both sides had been building lugged steel for a while by then and gotten pretty good at it. |

Nice work.
All the components appear to be Campagnolo Victory except the cranks and seatpost.
The cranks are the last generation Campy Super Record without the flutes in the crank arms. They had a 144mm bolt center diameter (BCD).
Rare 41 tooth chainrings were the smallest that would fit on this crank but 42T was more common.
The Victory cranks had a 116mm bolt center diameter. The smallest chainring was 35T.
I have a 50cm almost all original 1985-86 Professional. It has a non original seat and seat post plus different wheels.
The tubing is Reynolds 531 C (Competition) which is what is spec'd out in the US catalog.
Your bike has a Reynolds 531P (Professional) decal on the down tube but Reynolds 531C decals on the forks.
Reynolds 531P is lighter with thinner wall thickness than 531C. |

Thanks so much for the help on these! Here is the finished product! By the way, as far as I know, those decals date from 1986/87. They first appeared during the 1986 Tour de France. Interestingly, Fignon didn't use them, but the rest of the team did.
