I've been lurking on the list but haven't posted recently. I thought the group might enjoy seeing these pictures of my modest "Gitane Shrine." The bikes are 83 and 84 Team Pros. The 83 is totally original and unrestored, with all of the French equipment. It's not my size and is strictly a hanger queen these days.
The 84 was my race bike back in the day and has been repainted and restored with period-correct Campy Super Record gear like the team bikes of that year. It still gets ridden on sunny dry days (like yesterday), with the rider wearing the proper team kit, of course. The posters are just a few items I've picked up on eBay over the years.

Ditto, Wisey. Very nice, Fred.
What are the differences, if any, between the 1983 and the 1984 framesets? Was the 1984 chainstay originally chromed?
Also...what did Lemond write on the Gitane poster (under your name)?
By the way, that Castelli poster is one of my favorites. I believe the photos are all from the same year (1983), but each Gitane pictures is completely different. The most unique frame is the one which Fignon is riding, which has chromed lugs and a chrome fork! |

Would love to see a closer pic of that bike Fignon is riding boys......
Chrome lugs? Mmmm. Sounds super corsa(ish). Did they do a revved up version of the team pro or something? |

Thanks, everyone. I thought that this group might enjoy seeing these bikes.
To answer some questions, the only difference between the 83 and 84 bikes is the funky braze-on mount on the 83 for the French front derailleur.
Yes, the 84 originally had a chrome chainstay on the drive side. It was one of the frames that suffered from a drive side rear dropout failure, so original rear dropouts were replaced with Campy and the frame was repainted. I didn't have the chrome redone. So it's not 100% original.
Greg wrote "Tailwinds Forever!" when he autographed my poster. That was probably his catch phrase of the day - he was signing all sorts of stuff for people. But it's still a nice thought...
And yes, there might be room for another special Gitane or two in the collection - although if I'd turned around and taken the photos facing the other direction you would have seen the rest of the collection, which is taking over my basement |
