New Bee question

I would like to build a second set of wheels (aluminum rims) for my ca. 1974 gitane. I know the French hubs are unique.

See this set of 36 hole hubs listed on Ebay: "Vintage Normandy Hubs , made in France 1978 , Front and Rear". Is this enough info to be reasonably sure that I would have a fit?

Welcome to the Forum,

There are 2 issues concerning your bike.

1. Bikes from the 1970s had 5 speed freewheels. The standard width of rear hubs was 120mm across the lock nuts (OLN).

The later 6 and 7 speed hubs were 126mm wide.

2. Most French made hubs from the 1970s used French (metric) freewheel threads on the hubs.

You don't need French hubs or even metric threaded hubs. You can use a British threaded rear hub. British threaded freewheels are easier to find.

Thanks for the reply

I stand with egg on my face. Embarassed

Yes, the front is 95mm and the back 120mm.

I totaled an early 70's Schwinn over a dozen years ago but saved some of the spare stuff I had. Have a set of 27 inch x 1 1/4 inch wheels (steel rims) with 95mm and 120mm hubs on them in the garage loft. So I have had the hubs I need all along for this "new" bike.
