Huret derailers (a svelto on the rear) with Adrupat Universel cottered cranks. Unfortunately it has been painted so many times that there are no original markings visible on the bike itself. I am not so sure, looking at the lugs. and the rear brake cable routing.... I'm pretty sure it is a French bike - the bottom bracket looks to me to have French thread. Thanks! Can you post a close up picture of the seat stay cluster? Need to see the top of the seat stays. Also the cable stops on the top tube and chain stay. I don't recall seeing those lugs on a Gitane before but without the other details it's hard to know for sure. BTW, that stem is sitting a little high. It should have at least 3" (75mm) of the quill inserted into the steerer. The quill on a metric stem should measure 21.9mm to 22.0mm. Non metric stems are 22.1mm to 22.2mm. _________________ Chas. So it has changed color - I put the primer on it in these pictures. The first two are of the cable stops on the top tube - the same cable stops are used all over the bike - and after that, two of the seat crown. Thanks for all your help - it could well be that the bike's exact history will never be known. If that's the case, I think I'll just call it "the old French bike" and let it go at that! I got it for only $20 but somehow I get the idea that at some point it was somebody's "baby". Niles. During the Bike Boom manufacturers used what ever they could get. Notice the brake cable stops on this Gitane frame. Gitane put them on either side plus near the top or the bottom. Everything else looks like it could be a Gran Sport. It could be a frame that some other company made for Gitane??? This is a St Ettienne, a company that contract built for other brands plus marketed some of their own bikes. _________________ Chas. I don't think we'll ever know, but it's nice to have this attention to detail! Personally I think the front lugs look like the St. Etienne, and I like the name, so I might call the bike the "St. Etienne". It's going to have to be something of a "Frankenbike", simply because I'm finding that cotter pins are just too hard to maintain these days. There are literally under 30 cotter pins in all the bike shops in Boulder now, just used stuff, random sizes. So I'm likely to upgrade the front chainring to a more modern bottom bracket. But I'm going to try to keep as much of the original bike's character as I can. The model could be of the P variant - P8 or PA10. The lugs on the bike in question are probably Bocama type 30 lugs that a lot of French bikes used in the 70s. _________________ Chas.
