I found an early 70s service course TdF professional rusting away at my town dump and I'm rehabbing it. Any suggestions on how to remove the BB fixed cup? I'm aware that it's RH threads but don't have any wrench that fits.
Thanks.

I've had the best luck with stripping the frame down, locking the fixed cup in a big vise mounted to a big table, and turning the frame around the cup - making absolutely sure you're spinning it in the right direction and the vise is clamped securely on the flats of the cup.
Fixed cups tend to be removed less frequently than the adjustable cup so they're often rust wielded to the bottom bracket, especially if the frame has sat outside for a period of time.
Good luck and let us know how it goes. |

I tried a big vise, but couldn't get a good enough purchase on the fixed cup to do the job.
I heartily endorse the tool tip from Sheldon Brown to which Chas referred you.
I initially tried a harder bolt with a little finer thread - that stripped when the going got tough.
You'll need a deep socket to go inside the frame to the bolt or nut, but be careful, the socket may be too big to actually fit on the bolt and inside the frame.
I think I had to use a 1/2" breaker bar and a big wrench with a cheater to get the leverage I needed.
Good luck! |

Thanks for all of your suggestions--I will give Sheldon's method a try. If all else fails, is it easy enough to rebuild the BB without removing the fixed cup? Also, is there a left/right side to the spindle (I can find any markings on it).
BTW this is a stronglight BB circa 1971....is there any market for used bike parts from this era? I'd like to find a Mafac "racer" rear brake for this bike. |

The standard length for these spindles was 118mm. The chainring side is longer.

They're always for sale on eBay. Search "Mafac". |

Not sure where you're located. Our local bike shop has been around for many years - sold Peugeot's back when I was in college here. They still have a lot of their old tools including one for removing the fixed cup.
You could check with shops in your area and see if anyone has one and if they'd let you drop in with the frame and use the tool to take the cup out. |
