I have Found this Gitane at the dump, it has been upgraded with newer components and such, nonetheless I was UNSURE of the model of the Frame. The serial number on the bottom bracket is completely unreadable, and the number on the left stay is thus: 1208 very tiny and MAYBE 3 9 (?)maybe a 3rd number.....

THE decals read as thus:Record du Monde, Monde International Marquez(?)
Champion du Monde, Tour d'Italia, Monde du Houre, Champion du Monde, Monde Inter Marquez, Record du Monde, with a Blue Globe emblem.

The Bike is a cool sparkle blueish purple.

I have diacomp brakes, and I dressed the bars and saddle myself.

BE GREAT if ANYONE of YOU Experts OUT there, Would have an idea about when this bike was made; whether it was made specifically for this race, level of bike, etc.

THANKS so MUCH for your TIME, I look forward to hearing from you utterly amazing Franco-Gitane-Philes.....

Peace, ReBecca

Bike is a 1972-74 Gran Sport. Some of them came with Suntour derailleurs.

The crank, seat bar and stem are not original.

Also it looks like someone masked the decals and rattle can sprayed it.

Gitane Serial Numbers mean nothing! Rolling Eyes

Those names on the seat tube decals are just races that teams sponsored by Gitane won over a spread of many years.

The Gran Sport was their entry level bike.

Even though as Chas says it's not a super duper light weight racing bike, it's still a great find from the dump, and I like the treatment of the bars and saddle. Somebody equipped it with a triple chainring, maybe to get up hills and mountains. It will weigh a few pounds more than the higher end Gitanes we all covet, but enjoy riding it until somebody sends a Tour de France to the dump!
