Hello, my name is Mart and I'm new here. All the way from Amsterdam-the Netherlands, a real bikers city. Monday last week my bike (an ADAC hybrid city bike) was stolen from the corridor of my studio. I had left open the frontdoor for just a minute. After one bike-less day I went to the bike shop just around the corner to find myself another one. I asked for a second hand hybrid city bike, but there wasn't one available at that moment. Than they pointed at a white racing bike hanging on the wall. No steer and saddle yet, but a very nice new 'old school' racing bike. A (NOS!) Gitane from 1978. The very last one of a bunch 'old-school' racing bikes that were bought from a seller who had stopped his business. It was love at first sight. It took less than a minute to decide; it wasn't an old-school racing bike anymore, it was my new bike!
I asked them to mount a straight steer (the original steer came with it as well) and picked some really nice wooden handles to finish it. For the the saddle I choose a new 'classic' leather Brooks. Last Friday I could pick her up. Went on the internet and came on this site. Discoverd the '78 brochure and finally found out my new bike is a genuine 'Gitane NATION 1849'. 35 years old and brand new at the same time!!!

Wow beautiful bike! Will you need a big lock to keep it safe in Amsterdam?

| Yes, even more than one! The black thing on the lower tube is a foldable lock (ABUS BORDO). In Amsterdam you really need to lock the frontwheel to the frame and the frame to a lamp post, road sign, bicycle rack or whatsoever. |

After a closer look my '78 Gitane isn't de SUPER SPRINT 1847 I thought it was. It's a NATION 1849 (same specs. as mentioned in the '78 catalogue. Frame is complete Reynolds 531 and has bidon holder connecting points and two solid cable guides at the upper tube. (Initially I was misled by the SUPER SPRINT-colour). In the meantime the bike has it's original set up again. Will post some photo's soon.
A few questions. Does the simular Olympic frame have a wider rear fork?
What brand and type pump and bidon holder are 'correct' for this (NATION 1849) bike? Zefal? |
