Lofter, FYI...
The frame is probably made of Columbus SL or maybe even KL tubing.
I've never seen a Gitane with Columbus SLX tubing. SLX was SL with riffling in the butted sections of the seat tube, down tube and the chainstays where they went into the BB shell. It made the frame torsionally stiffer across the bottom bracket. It also added about 30+g to the weight over standard SL tubing (~1 oz.).
Columbus KL tubing had very thin wall thicknesses and was about 250g lighter SL. It was not very common, probably mostly used on team and custom built frames.
My 1984 Team Pro is probably made of Columbus KL tubing.
It's interesting that the 1985 team bike has 1984 decals not the 1985 version.

The pro teams never used those 1985/1986 decals. I don't know why...maybe it was just a personal preference thing with the team. I know I wouldn't have wanted them. |

Hello there, yes my bike has an SLX Frame with that riffling inside,
i felt it with my fingers when i got that Frame NOS.
By the way all those wonderful bikes on the pics above, belong to
Mr.Emile Arbes, the brother of Hubert Arbes (ex-Team Mate of Hinault)
he is still running a bike shop in Lourdes.
http://cycles-vtt-pyrenees.com/
so his brother is somehow directly at the "source" for such real brilliant bikes.
best wishes,
Holger |
