Hi all, I request your valuable help

I found at a bazaar the next frame. I think it is a Gitane, would I could help confirm?, What year is it?

My intention is to remove all the paint and see the true state of repair in the BB, and whether it is feasible to restore the frame with a good paint and original decals, for arming with modern pieces for my personal use.

Thank you very much and sorry for my bad English

Greetings,

It's a 1972-73 Gitane Tour de France frame. All Reynolds 531 tubing. It's been repainted. The Reynolds 531 decal looks like someone took a paper picture and taped it on to the seat tube.

The Simplex derailleur hanger on the rear drop out has been modified to use all standard mount derailleurs (Campy, Suntour, Shimano and so on).

The bottom bracket looks like someone stripped out the threads and then hammered the outside down so that the fixed cup fit tighter.

This frame had French metric bottom bracket and headset threads. French bottom brackets had right hand threads on both sides.

Someone probably forced a British cup with left hand threads into the bottom bracket which stripped the threads.

Either that or someone heated up the bottom bracket with a torch and turned the fixed cup the wrong way to remove it.

You might have a difficult time finding a shop with French metric bottom bracket taps.

Without seeing the frame it's hard to tell what you will have to do to fix the problem.

Thank you very much for your reply;

Just one more question, looking at the tour de france catalogs of those years appears as only 3 tubes Reynolds, but you said that in this frame all tubes are Reynolds, is this so?, the fork is Reynolds?

I will be posting the progress.

Regards and thanks again

The European version Tour de France frames were only 3 tubes Reynolds 531 (3 TUBES RENFORCE)

They had domed ends on the fork blades and rear stays.

From 1968 to 1973 Gitane Tour de France bikes exported to the US had all Reynolds 531 frames. Your frame may have come from the US or it was a US model.

The forks and rear stays had "fish mouth" cutouts on the tubes (there were probably a few exceptions but that was how Gitane made their frames).

Hello everyone and thanks for the help verktyg

Derived from the circumstances that the box had already been modified in mounting the rear derailleur and the damage to the box bottom bracket, I decided to change the bottom bracket by a standard measure, in turn soldering guides and cable stops , supports change levers, front derailleur and support sopot pump and chain.

continue with the paint job and decals application.

Regards
