No relation to seller, yada, yada, yada....
58cm partial bike... looks like a 1987 R.S. but it's team blue not fuchsia (pink). It has the number tab under the top tube like the R.S. and Team Pro.
http://tinyurl.com/pz5q8y7
The tubing is Reynolds 531 Professional which are lighter than the Reynolds 531 Competition tubes spec'd out for the R.S.
Should make a super nice riding and handling bike plus there are some decent components that come with it.
If it were a 56cm frame I'd be jumping all over this one. |

Yep, too tall for me. The buy it now price seems high considering the mismatched components. I sometimes why these things are posted with all components except wheels. |

Lofter, I saw that in the 1987 catalog too. It looks a lot like the Inter except for the number tab and 531P tubing.
Reynolds 531P (Professionnel) tubing has the same wall thicknesses as Reynolds 753R tubing:
Top Tube - 0.7mm x 0.5mm x 0.7mm
Down Tube - 0.8mm x 0.5mm x 0.8mm
Seat Tube - 0.7mm x 0.5mm x 0.7mm
Fork Blades - 1.0mm x 0.5mm
Seat Stays - 0.5mm
Chain Stays - 0.6mm
In comparison:
Reynolds 531C (Competition):
Top Tube - 0.8mm x 0.5mm x 0.8mm
Down Tube - 0.9mm x 0.6mm x 0.9mm
Seat Tube - 0.8mm x 0.5mm x 0.7mm
Fork Blades - 1.0mm x 0.5mm
Seat Stays - 0.8mm
Chain Stays - 0.8mm
Standard Reynolds 531 used for years on production models like the early TdF and Super Corsa (now called Reynolds 531ST):
Top Tube - 1.0mm x 0.7mm x 1.0mm
Down Tube - 1.0mm x 0.7mm x 1.0mm
Seat Tube - 1.0mm x 0.7mm x 1.0mm
Fork Blades - 1.2mm x 0.8mm
Seat Stays - 0.9mm
Chain Stays - 0.9mm
And... for comparison, Reynolds 501 tubing:
Top Tube - 0.9mm x 0.6mm x 0.9mm
Down Tube - 0.9mm x 0.6mm x 0.9mm
Seat Tube - 0.9mm x 0.6mm x 0.9mm
Fork Blades - 0.9mm
Seat Stays - 0.9mm
Chain Stays - 0.9mm |

I take it then 501, while thinner than standard 531 tubing is just a heavier material |

A cubic inch of steel weighs the same no matter the alloy.
Which weighs more, a pound of lead or a pound of feathers?
I suspect the weight difference is in the slightly thicker fork blades and rear stays than some of the flavors of 531. |

Gitane in the USA sold a bunch of these "hybrids" in the 1980s. I have one as well...it was essentially a team pro with a chromed fork and those white decals. and the rear brake cable routing was different. |

This frame looks to be, essentially, identical to that of my '87 Inter. The rear brake cable, as for this example, entered and exited on the top front and rear of the top tube. The sticker on my example also indicated as equipped with 531P. Whether the frame was actually a 531P frame, or not, is another question. The frame also came with the number bracket, as on this example. The big mistake that I made was riding it to work. Lesson learned: Never use a thoroughbred on a milk run.

Peter, sorry to hear about your horse...
The tubing sticker is probably correct because Reynolds was impossible to deal with them about decals (back then and even today).
The number tab screams a Pro or replica frame. |

Thanks, Chas! This one is my size, as well! Personally, I don't know if I would want to mess with replacing components, however. The standard Inter, as we all know, came standard with a Victory group, which I found to be quite good. Replaced the Inter with a Replica 11 soon afterwards.
Best Regards,
Peter H. |
