Hi Guys .... great site! I was refered to this forum as regards a recent purchase
I recently bought a bike which I have been using for the past several months as a daily commuter (currently, I average approx 120+ miles per week)
There are no decals on the bike except for one foil decal on the front which states "Tour De France"
I'm hoping that it's a Gitane TDF .... Here is some info:
It is 6 speed with Huret gearing
the saddle that it came with is a Sella Italia Anatomic brushed leather... I have since added a different saddle but still have the original
the seatpost is Laprade.
The handlebar stem is SR ( Sakae Ringyo)
When I aquired the bike, the back wheel was /is a 700C, and the front wheel was one size larger (with a tubular tyre) .... I have replaced the front wheel with a 700C clincher wheel.
I do not see any maker's name on the brakes
There is a serial number stamped on the back lug (see attached photo)

this is what the bike looked like when I bought it:

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but your bike is not a Gitane - so it's not a vintage Tour de France model.
It looks like a mid to late 1970's French or maybe even Belgian bike - a lower mid range or upper entry level model.
What diameter is the seatpost. That could be an indicator of the type of tubing that your bike is made of.
The brakes are most likely Weinmann.
It could have been a bike made by one of the large French companies like Manufrance that made a lot of private label bikes.
The forks look like they may have been made by Tange in Japan. They sold a lot of pre-manufactured to bike companies. |

thanks for the info .... much appreciated. I'm sad, as I was hoping that it is a Gitane. It rides ok though so I may keep it as a spare bike |
