I just found out that Sheldon Brown, perhaps one of the most knowledgeable bicycle enthusiasts in the USA passed away. From what I understand, he passed away last night.

If you knew him or knew of him, you know what a significant loss this is. If you didn't know about him, visit his site to get an idea about his contribution to the cycling community.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Thanks for the update Stephan. This is very sad news indeed. I never knew Sheldon but have certainly visited his website on many occasions as a valuable resource. The cycling world has lost a terrific guy with huge passion. Thoughts to his family at this time.

Tim

Thanks Stephan for the sharing the sad news.

I have been following Sheldon's Journal off and on since earlier this fall. He has been struggling with MS and had been quite Candid in sharing his frustrations in his daily Journal. A Brilliant man of many talents and wonderful wacky sense of humor. A sad loss.

My condolence to his family and close friends.

I was stunned when I found out this afternoon about Sheldon Brown's passing.

I just looked up something on his website last night.

I never knew him personally but we communicated via email a number of times. In one message he turned me on to his treatise on slavery and the American Civil War:

http://sheldonbrown.net/slaverywar.html

After reading this article I came away with a new historical perspective plus an appreciation for the humanitarian side of Sheldon Brown.

At a Super Bowl party yesterday one of our friends told us that he had a heart attack 2 weeks ago. In a head count, it turns out there were 7 stents among the 11 people at the party.

Two years ago this week I was recovering from having a stent put in myself to correct a partial blockage in a coronary artery. Shortly afterward I started cycling again after about a 6-7 year hiatus. That's when I discovered the wit and expertise of Sheldon Brown.

I had a number of 25-20 year old bikes that I knew all about but I didn't know much about things like index shifting, cassettes and so on. That's when I turned to Sheldon's web site. Hopefully the website will continue as a memorial to Sheldon....

Chas.
