Have learned from this website that Gitane holds 11 Tour victories, but would like to know the years these victories occurred so that I can read the sagas and stories without wasting time on the wrong years. Being a Gitane owner, we all ought to be able to recite these facts, and have been wondering about this for a long time. Can any of our astute comrades direct me to the info.?
Thanks, Cort

Thanks to you both, now the search begins for a 1957 TdF, a fitting 51st anniversary replica. This website is fabulous, and a treasure trove of information that I've been seeking for many years. Congratulations on the results of a lot of work that's not going unnoticed. >Anyone know where I can find some dual aluminum water bottles for handlebars?<
I got an old Scott Bars video from a bike shop that no longer wanted it, it's a 10 minute loop of the first year of the Scott aero bar, LeMond vs Fignon, would these guys be both on Gitane?
Thanks, Cort |

Nope. The year Fignon lost the tour by 8 seconds, Lemond was on a Bottecchia, and Fignon was on a Raleigh (that explains the 8 seconds!). |

The Botteccia that LeMond was on had all that areo faring built into the frame. Which was done by welding a piece of plate steel into the corner between the tubes and then filling in around it with 'bog' (auto repair filler - whatever they call it where you are). It also was equipped with a Mavic groupset, ans a Mavic rear wheel.
Fignon, on the other hand was on a Raleigh made from shaped tubing but without all the faring, Campy equipped, and Campy discs. The whole thing must have been 3 or 4 lbs lighter than LeMond's bike. Remember Lemond didn't win the TT by 8 secs, he won the Tour by 8 secs. He won the TT by more than 50 secs. Over 24.5km!! Against Fignon, who was a superbe time trialist and on super form!!!!!
Explain that!
Oops - I just went and checked some photos. Fignon's Raleigh did have all the faring too. OK, I'm wrong.....
I do remember reading somewhere that LeMond's Botteccia TT bike was over 24lbs. That ain't light. |

Anquetil did not ride a Gitane in 1957 or 1961. This is an error that needs to be corrected on this Website's racing page.
--------
Between 1957 and 1964 Jacques Anquetil
won the Tour de France five times and was one of the most charismatic
figures of his time. Riding a Simplex equipped Helyett Speciale for his first
three Tour victories, these bikes were essentially French, using Simplex
derailleurs, TA pedals, Mafac brakes, Atom hubs, TA and later
Stronglight cranksets.
In 1963 Anquetil switched teams and
would ride Campagnolo equipped
Gitane bicycles to victories in the 1963
and 1964 Tours de France.
Source: http://www.theracingbicycle.com/Gran_Sport.html
----------
Anquetil rode a Helyett in the 57, 61 and 62 Tours.
Anquetil won on a Gitane in 63 and 64
so Gitane has 9 victories in the Tour while Helyett has 3.
Look down further in the list and the compiled list of winners.

You are absolutely right, and plan on making the changes....
The original source for this information was Gitane (france) itself, which has proven to obviously be wrong.
Sorry for the misinformation, and it will be changed in due course.

Regarding your contention that Gitane won the Tour 11 times, I believe Anquetil was a member of the Helyett team from 1957-1962. Anquetil did not join Gitane until 1963, and won the tour with a Gitane bike 2 times in 1963, 1964.
That makes Gitane with 9 wins in the tour:
1963, 1964 Anquetil(2)
1976 Van Impe
1978, 1979, 1981, 1982 Hinault(4)
1983, 1984, Fignon(2)

No prob....
No, just a fan.
Ride an old steel DeRosa and Legnano right now, but would love to restore a 82-84 Gitane someday.
I've ridden carbon and Alum frames, but steel just feels right, and riding frames similar to those that Hinault, Fignon and Lemond rode in Gitane's glory days would be something. |

Actually, only one man made it under 50" loss to Lemond that day : Thierry Marie, Fignon's team mate, who finished something like 30" later. Fignon was 3rd. So it's not as much a bad day for Fignon as it is an INCREDIBLE day for Greg LeMond.
Fignon's perfomances against the clock have always been a kind of a question mark. He was capable of the best & the worst, a bit like Charly Mottet whereas Hinault was always at his best & LeMond always in a good position but rarely a winner, even in his last years, he was always a decent time-trialist. |

Just noticed - the updated Gitane website, www.gitane.com , states 11 victories in the Tour de France on the homepage. The Gitane listing in Wikipedia (under the Palmarès section) offers 10 victories - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gitane
Regards the Wikipedia entry, Lucien Aimar's win in 1966 might well have been on a Gitane or a Géminiani but I'm not sure on very quick research.
