Thanks Chas.! That's more than I would have guessed. In 1984 I purchased my first mountain bike. Cannondale sm500 serial number BB0007 (number 7!). 24" rear ~ 26" front. I still have it, ride it at least twice a week in the woods. Fairly original been torn down, re-built many, many times. Bikes are so freaking cool.

I must say I was a bit nervous coming on here with little Gitane knowledge. I was sure I would be flamed as an ignorant nOOb. Hasn't been the case at all (yet) Wink Thanks all for your help everyone!

and I promise no more creeknfail pics on the Gitane site.

Here's some pictures of my 1984 TdF - before and after:

(eBay picture)

I changed to wider bars and a shorter stem plus put on new Modolo gum rubber hoods. The bike had the original thick black plastic handle bar tape. I prefer cloth tape. I reused the original brake cable housings since they had almost no use but switched to stainless steel brake cables. Cool

I also switched from the Ofmega black plastic shift levers to a pair of black Simplex Retro Friction shift levers plus I exchanged the Campy NR rear derailleur to an Ofmega Master RD. Very Happy

There is a lot of civility on this site, that's what I like about it. Very Happy

I vote for Tressostar/Cat Eye Yellow. Heck, it's just tape, you can change it on a whim. If you're a four roll user, get some cheap white on eBay for the first layer and tape the color of your choice over it.

Have disassembled/cleaned pretty much everything at this point. The pedals and freewheel were already cleaned and rebuilt with new balls when I took this pic.

Does anyone have a source for the rubber o-rings used as seals in these Stronglight headsets? They're the same size as used in the races of the old Specialized headsets as well. Been to every hardware/plumbing store around.

Great picture, by the way. You aren't messing around when you say you are going to "rebuild" the bike.

Kevin,

Now, that's an impressive photo. You've done a great job on each component and I really like the organisation of the layout. It's going to be a great bike when completed.

Regards Stronglight headset seals, my best lead would be Spa Cycles in the UK.

The link to Stronglight headsets available is:

http://www.spacycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m2b2s115p0&tbv=STRONGLIGHT_PARTS_&_ACCESSORIES_Components_-_Steering_-_Headsets

The main Stronglight area on their site is:

http://www.spacycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m2b2s0p0

For further information their contact details are as follows:

Good luck with the build.

Tim

These style Stronglight headsets come up for sale regularly on eBay and sell new for reasonable prices. Buy a whole headset and use it for spares.
