Hi all!
I just bought (eBay) what I believe is an '86 or '87 Gitane Record. |
SO YOU'RE THE ONE WHO OUTBID ME!
I'd change the bars and stem, maybe the seat, update the cables and brake blocks as needed.
Also, those aero rims like on the rear of what should have been MY bike are supposed to be pretty harsh riding. I'd replace it with a period correct rim.
Campy Victroy and Triomphe components are highly under rated. They work fine.

There have certainly been some good Gitanes for sale recently.
You got a great buy Grumpy and good to know that you have pin pointed it to be the model in the '85/'86 catalogue.

Interesting group here
Sorry about beating you out for the bike Chas...uh, not really! But not to worry, it's in good hands. Now that I've had it long enough to take a good look at it, here's my report:
This thing is a real garage queen. I'd be very surprised if it has 500 miles on it. It's not ABSOLUTELY pristine, but very close and be willing to bet most of the chips in the paint are from being moved around in the garage. The chrome is flawless. There are some black rubs on the paint that seem to come off with a bit of elbow grease. All of the bits and pieces of drive train, brakes and so on have "just"enough grit on them to let me know it wasn't power washed. The stickers are pretty good and I found I could make them just about perfect with a little burnishing on the edges.
What's wrong with the bike is what the owner changed. The rear wheel and the bar/stem combo are what leaps out at you and what I'm going to address first. BTW- I got it upside down today and if I'm reading the serial # correctly, it's an '85.
Anyway, no question, I got really lucky with this thing and I will do my best to honor it's heritage. It's officially become my Winter project now.
I will do my best to get it photographed in it's present state tom'r.
If you guys don't mind, I'm going to ask some questions hoping that your collective knowledge might help me move this thing along but I think I'll do that under a separate thread.

Grumpy,
Don't fret about Chas. I think he feels guilty having more Motobecanes than Gitanes and is trying to change that (humor Chas.).
We DO all look forward to your photos and questions.

Stephan, BANISH him from the group....
I'm glad someone like you got this bike. I was concerned some shredder got it and was going to part it out and turn it into a fixie. Judging from the eBay photos it looked like a really nice, very rare bike. I have a weakness for red bikes, and orange and blue an....
No one was seriously bidding on this bike all week. When I came home from work and logged on to eBay, I was expecting to go to PayPal and take care of business.
This should be a really nice riding and handling bike. The frame geometry is very close to my 84 Super Corsa and Tour de France bikes which are close to being my all time favorite riding bikes. At 58cm it's probably a little big for me (hrumph, hrumph, singing soprano). The Reynold 501 tubing is every bit as good as Reynolds 531 and Columbus framesets. If the workmanship on your record is anything like my 1984 Gitanes then it's far better than what rolled out of Peugeot during those years. I'd rank it better than most production bikes coming out of Italy too!
Campagnolo Triomphe and Victory gruppos never became popular in their day because of stick in the mud old school Campy aficionados plus Campy Nuovo Record gruppos were available dirt cheep up through 1988!
I like the the looks of the Victory and Triomphe cranks. 25 years of Campy and Campy knockoff cranks were a bit BORING!
I have the original bars and stem off of my 1984 Tour de France which are period correct. They're in almost new condition. I changed them on my TdT because I needed a short stem and wider bars. PM (Private Message) me if you are interested.
Chas. |

Wisey,
I think yours might be considered "p", as it is not French. "P" is certainly French. I wouldn't mind an "a-d" built with 531 though.

I've posted pics of the bike in the owner's gallery. Much to my surprise, it seemed to work. I have some ideas about dealing with it's flaws and I'd love to here input from you all.
