Here's an interesting 1991 (age as stated in the ad) Gitane from France. The photo is not of great quality.

I like the 'Laurent' on the seat tube. Would this have been added afterwards or was this a special edition?

Tim

The "Laurent" wouldn't be a Gitane factory decal. That would have been added at some point afterwards, possibly by a dealer (i.e. the dealer/shop was called "Cycles Laurent").

Looking at how the letters are a little crooked - especially the T, I would say they were an add on.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I thought that might have been added afterwards. It also looks like there is some pixel distortion. Even so, a nice looking bike at an extremely good price.

I never understand why any seller posts bad photos (small, out of focus, etc, etc.) of an item they want to sell.

The paint job may be "deceptive". That is, I believe, one of the two tone fades that Gitane used at the time. From the side, every tube appears to be dark green. From the front, the tubes are painted a lime green color. I don't know if that was a very good explanation of it....

Would it have been an iridescent paint job or was it simply dark green on the sides and lime to the front and back? It sounds really quite an appealing finish.

It was the latter of your two options....

Interesting picture. The rear derailleur looks to be completely out of place. Like it's meant for much wider gearing.

The 'Laurent' looks amateurish and the World Champion colors above it look like they are from a Colnago decal set. They should have a matching color bar at the bottom too.

This picture represents one of my biggest beefs about people trying to sell bikes online - they only show the left side of the bike! Confused

Is there something obscene about the right side of a bicycle? Should we be marketing "modesty skirts" for bikes like they have for dogs?

Seriously, the most important parts of a bike for me are the components on the right side: the chainrings and derailleurs.

Is it because many people mount a bike from the left side or is it rampant technophobia? The big wheel was the worst thing to happen to western man!

Chas.

It does look out of place Grumpy. This might be because of the triple but it's not needed on the ratios as shown.

I agree Chas about the correct side of the bike. Just love the dog. Great analogy.
