I recently purchased a pre-73 TdF frameset (I assume that's what it is, as it has the rear brake cable stop braze on) and I have a few questions, as I am new to Gitanes.
It's the ubiquitous green color and needs paint. I was thinking of a color change to the criterium purple color. Is the purple a metallic color? Is it correct for the bike?
What hardware attaches to the rear brake cable stop braze on?
C'est tout 531, ne ce'st pas?

Welcome to the group.
Many of the Gitane colors from the late 1960s through the mid 1970s were "candy apple" transparent lacquers applied over a white primer base rather than metallic. The British called these "flamboyant" colours.
Here's a few of the colors offered:

White, black, orange, several light blue colors and yellow were solid colors, the rest were candy apple.
You could still have the bike painted a candy apple purple or you could go with metallic paint which would probable be less expensive.
You can get good copies of the original decals from Cyclomondo on eBay.
There was a cable adjusting screw in the rear centerpull brake bridge attached to the top of the seat stays.
You can probably find something to work scrounging around in the junk boxes at bike shops that have been in business for a long time. Check with American Cyclery in the Haight.

The brake cable hardware can also be scrounged off of really crappy brakes that are available in almost every bike shop for about $5. You just take the cable stop off th brakes, and then put it on the frame. |

It will be included with the crappy brake...it is just a nut, with the cable stop using a special bolt. Very hard to explain...but easy to understand once you see it. If necessary, I could find a picture of one and post it. |

Check out the picture that I posted above. It clearly shows the stop bolted to the bridge and the cable adjuster.
That was a "before" picture of my late 60s TdF before I cleaned it up.
