While I try to figure out what to do with the fork, I'm assembling the drivetrain. Fortunately I've got a metric Nuovo Record front derailleur, but today I tried to put on Suntour Power Shifters, which I think work like retrofriction shifters but a whole lot cheaper. They don't tighten enough. Can I shim them with something, or do I have to come up with metric shifters?

This one turns out not to be too difficult. Shimano 600 arabesque shifters I have fit it. I don't think they are metric, but they can just adjust a little more than the power shifters. Maybe most clamp-on shifters would fit a metric downtube.

Dave,
I don't know that Campy ever made metric shift lever clamps or front derailleur clamps.
Campy, Shimano and most French components should fit both 1 1/8" and 28mm tubes without modification.
Now Suntour on the other hand... I've had to file the clamps on some Suntour components to get them tight enough on metric tubes.
