I hadn't seen this one before. Hinault's dog incident in Paris-Roubaix 81.

Excellent, thanks Wisey. Impressive stuff and great to see it again. At the time it was incredible but looking back it seems to be even more so. What a race the Roubaix is.

I really miss the elegance of steel machines.

Once in a while I get out my copy of "A Sunday in Hell" and watch it again. It's amazing to watch those guys (Merckx, DeVlamink, Maertens, etc) and the speeds that they are going on the pave. Modern technology has doen nothing in that race. They were going just as fast 30 years ago on steel bikes with Campy NR, and 32 spokes in each wheel!! Shocked How could they possibly go so fast with so many spokes??!! Twisted Evil The aerodynamics alone would have been a killer, and that doesn't take into account the weight of all those extra spokes!! Rolling Eyes And brass nipples, well...... don't get me started on brass nipples........

Wisey,

I'm with you all the way on that. That's my favourite cycling film. Everything about it is magical. I agree with your thoughts entirely. The speeds are very impressive, Peter Post's time is testament to that and your observation.

As well as more spokes, they (we!) had at least half the number of gears back then.

Doesn't adding more gears add weight? Laughing

I run a TT bike with alu frame, carbon fork, Alloy seat pillar, heavy old TurboMatic saddle, Alloy bars, stem aero bars. Campy Record Alloy cranks & BB, Ultegra 9 speed brakes, derailleurs & chain, Ultegrs 8 speed bar cons, Sachs 7 speed screw on cluster, Falcon Trialist disc that I've had since 91, Mavic 3G tri-spoke that I've had since 93.

So, basically nothing is particularly light weight. It weighs 8.5kg. I was reading the other day that Ivan Basso's TT rig is 8.9kg.

So Sandman is correct in this case: Less graes = lighter.

Wisey,

You ave to cut back on the bevies before posting! Laughing

"Less graes = lighter"

Once I had my 1972 Super Corsa down to about 19 Lbs. by using Hi-E wheels, 250g sewups, a Zeus alloy freewheel, and all of the alloy bolts and nuts that were popular back then.

After 1 time trial I decided that at 175 Lbs. I weighed too much for all that "tinker bell" crap and went back to proper, reliable components.

I broke 60 minutes for 25 miles on that ride but decided that it was the tail wind and all of the pinto beans I ate the night before. Embarassed

Two Lbs. equals two less beers! Wink

Chas.

Wisey,

I've read that TT machines do tend to weigh more than the road bikes, although they didn't many years ago when they were simply adapted road bikes.

I agree, nothing like a real 10 speed, 12 or 14. I'm finding that there are too many gears nowadays, I just never use them all. Perhaps others do, maybe the Pros, but not me.
