Chad,
Some xxx or xxxx steel wool should clean up most of the rust on the chrome.

See 1986 Catalog section...front page has the Head tube Logo...so '86 seems correct.

BUT, your frame has the under top tube rear brake cable routing like the Team Pro shown in same catalog. Geezzzzzzzzzzzzz...there Gitane goes again.

It's the Campagnolo dropouts and brake cable routing that is the oddityon that bike....anyone can slap the wrong sticker on the tubes. However, that makes me think that my 1987 Inter, which came with 531P tubing decals, may actually be 531P. it was supposed to come with 531C....
Who knows?! |

The decals match but the brake cable routes into the top tube from the bottom on my frame. These guys at the factory have a great job- drinking all day and little to no QC... |

Check out the disclaimer in the lower right corner of page 7 in the '87 catalogue- pretty much covers all the inconsistencies... |

Do any of your components match the Specs. for either the TP or RS? (see Chas'. link). That may give you a clue???

I got the frame only... The head set says Stronglight Spidel, if that's any clue. |

It's probably a Stronglight A-9 headset with roller bearings instead of ball bearings.

Thanks for the pictures. Here is my theory: That is a Gitane Team Pro frameset that was repainted and rebadged. Gitane would send decals to people who asked for them in the 1980s (they sent them to me). Most of the team pros wouldn't be painted on the fork dropouts, which were chromed, if my memory serves me (and it often doesn't). Whoever repainted that bike didn't bother to tape off the fork ends. Doesn't look like a factory finish down there.
Then, there is the decals: The 531 decal isn't where Gitane placed them (usually on the down tube above the shifters), and the Gitane decals definitely aren't a factory application: The fork decals actually belong on the seat tube, and the seat tube decal is a down tube decal, which they just doubled-up on.
Which isn't to say that it doesn't look great. I actually really like the look of the "stylized systeme u" stripes on the fork.
But I do think that the bike is a respray. The fork tips (unfiled on the inside of the fork tip), plus all of the other indicators, really identify this as a Team Pro. When you take the fork out and in the BB shell, is there any evidence of the blue paint overspray? |
