If there is an '83' or an '84', that is a date code...probably the only two years Gitane used a date code. _________________ Stephan Andranian Costa Mesa, CA www.gitaneusa.com follow up pics   Posted: Sat Jun 20, 2009 5:17 pm bthandel@frontiernet.netb Joined: 20 Jun 2009 Posts: 5 bike size is approx 20-1/2" center of bb to top of seat tube. dated 14-3-84 on the bottom bracket. bike was built up with a mix of super record crank,deraileurs shifters. spidel headset.edco bb. modolo pro brakes.cinelli 1r stem and cinelli bars. small flange campy nuovo record hubs. sew ups. super record one bolt seat post.(26.8}. best i can describe as its raining like mad here and just turning dark. i,m assuming this would be an 84?der is stamped 84. i worked at a shop here in rochester ny that sold these when they had the connection with trek bikes. i do remember some of the earlier ones having dropout probs but i think they were different years. as i remember the bad droput frames were black?anyways thanks for letting me post this   Posted: Sat Jun 20, 2009 5:58 pm sandranian Site Admin Joined: 27 Feb 2006 Posts: 2701 Location: Southern California There are rumors that the Simplex dropouts failed on the driveside chainstay. However, I haven't seen any break...so take that for what it is worth! Looks like you have the simplex dropouts on that, right? That would make it (technically) a 1983. However, it could have been built in 1984, as the stamp would suggest. Very nice frameset you have there. That's how I understood the story. My "theory" is that the failures were the reason that Gitane started using Campagnolo dropouts in the 1984's...but that is just a theory. I wouldn't worry much about it: Still a fine bicycle, which I would gladly take off your hands if you don't want it. The 1984 also used Simplex...so yours is definitely a 1984 (I just went to the garage to check my 1984). The bikes that came after 1984 didn't use simplex (either Vitus or Campagnolo). Unless you need the money, because of the economy, right now may not be a good time to try to sell the frame on eBay. It might bring $200 as is. When the economy picks up a little, it could bring $350, especially with a full set of decals. 50cm (20") frames don't tend to sell as well as say 56cm to 60cm frames. If you could list it on Japanese eBay, that size would sell very well....
