Hi all!
I have a Flying Dutchman frame from around 1979-1980. It is a nice quality frame made with 531 tubing & Aquila dropouts. FD was the house brand of The Big Wheel Shop in Denver & possibly another shop in California. The only other information i can find about the FD is that they were supposedly made by Gitane. The treading for the bb & fork are english, not french. Any ideas how i could determine if its a Gitane in drag? Thanks! |

Welcome to the forum. The best thing to do is take some pictures and post them to the site. I don't have any history about Flying Dutchman frames (except for the reference in Spongebob Squarepants cartoons), but a picture is really the best way to find out if it is Gitane built! |

Here's a link to the Classic Rendezvous archives. There are 225 messages about Flying Dutchman bikes and The Big Wheel bike shop in Denver, CO.

The Big Wheel bike shop sold Gitanes in the early 70s. They also imported Flying Dutchman bikes more or less built to their specs.
Read some of the messages and you'll find the complete history.

Really pretty bike. Great repaint, by the way. It does not appear to be anything that was built by Gitane. The end treatment on the stays appears to be completely different. First, the seat stay tops are "fluted", which never appeared on any Gitanes that I am aware of. Second, the chain and seat stay ends at the rear dropout appear to be of a different treatment than on any other Gitane. I think it is fair to say that that bike was not built by Gitane. At least that is my educated guess. |
