...Also, the hubs pictured are older models without removable dust caps.

Its Rides! I got it on the road yeasterday, just as the wind was whipping up and the rain was coming in. It was great, all work well. It should be sunny on Sunday so a long ride and pitures will follow!
I just scored at great Stronglight 49D from someone on this board - A BIG THNAK YOU!
I am going to use a Velo-OrangeGrand Cru BB. what is the recomended axel width? |

Never mind! I found the "search" function and was able to see Chas said 116mm in a previous post. |

Thanks for the reference, 118mm was the standard width for Stronglight doubles, 122mm for triples. A 116mm should work OK. An old crank arm may tighten further onto the spindle than a new arm. If you run into a problem, you can get some thin freewheel spacers and put them on the fixed cup side of the BB to move the cranks out from the chainstay.
I had a Gran Sport that I used for a beater/trainer/commuter that I built up with all alloy components including a Sugino Mighty Competition crankset (as used on TdFs) and Campy hubs with alloy clincher rims. It weighed under 24 Lbs for a 54cm frame.
Good luck.

Just got back from the shakedown run on the Gitane, all went well, shifts fine, brakes good, no strange creaks or rattles. I discovered that I need better shoes for use with these pedals as the soles on my running shoes are way to wide. Suggestions would be appreciated. I wear 12.5 - 13 so most of the vintage leather on Ebay is way to small. I also need to find a longer stem. The current stem is 85mm and compared to my usual bike I am definately more cramped. The Brooks B17 has different feel for sure, not 100% sold on it but will log more miles before making that decision. Also waing for decals to arrive.
Specs.
Circa 1970 Gitane Grand Sport De Luxe size 61cm.
Brooks B17 saddle honey but darkened with neatsfoot oil.
Simplex Criterium Front and Rear Derailleurs and Shifters.
Mafac Racer Brakes with Koolstop pads.
Mafac Brake Levers with White Mafac hoods.
Solida cottered crank with 52 / 36 rings (soon to be replaced with Stronglight 49D 50 / 40).
Lyotard Pedals.
Christophe toe clips.
Velo-Orange staps and leather toe clip protectors.
Atax 85mm Stem.
Philippe - 'Franco Italia' bars 41.5cm c to c.
Stronglight headset.
Normandy high flange hubs / DT competition spokes, Sun CR-18 27" aluminum rims.
IRD 13 -24 5 speed freewheel.
Sram PC870 chain.
Continental Gatorskin tires. 27" X 1.25"
TA Criterium bottle cage.
Fi'zi:k microtex bar tape.
Gore Ride-on cables.
Generic aluminum seatpost.
A BIG THANK YOU! To all those here who have help with there wisdom and parts! Especially Jay!

Erik,
The Bike GODS are pleased. They will not be slashing your tires or cutting the cables...giggle. You may want to consider shortening the length of the cables and housing yourself as they appear to stand very high above the stem and bars.
Great job!!! We will all look forward to seeing it with all the decals in place.

Just for Hee-Ha's I weighed the Gitane, 28.25 pounds, the Cervelo on the other hand is 15.75. I think I need to do a Gitane that is made with some quality tubing. |

Switching from the 52/36 steel Solida cottered crank to a 50/40 Stronglight 49D with Velo-Orange BB dropped the weight 1.39 pounds to 26.86. |

I will be soon parting out this bike and selling off the parts to pay for the other Gitane I just did. Everything is for sale, most parts were new or NOS and have less that 100 miles on them.
Please let me know if anyone is interested in the parts before I put them on Ebay.
you can email me directly at erik@eadorwart.com
Thank you. |
