Just thought I would bring this up again for Historical purposes. Here is a photo of an original European TdF fork decal. At some point in time the 102 was cut off for use on USA Imports of the TdF. I have yet to find out why.

didn't we decide the "102" was related to the catalogue designation? I wonder if the factory decided to cut these decals after it ditched the 102 designation. Odd though, yes?
**********
I originally thought it had to do with the famous (or infamous) "Brew 102"

Yes, we decided that. I just got new photos and decided to bring it back to the surface for new folks on the list..

Funny, I was just about to post the same thing. I spotted that TdF fork with the 102 model number decal too.
Here's a picture of a Route de France fork decal with the model number 112 on it.
The frame is currently listed on eBay as a "Service Course" model:

The same seller has a Selle Italia Turbo Matic Lumbar Support listed too:

Speaking of decals, I just put a set of Cyclomondo foil decals on my 1972 Super Corsa. They look great!
Pictures to follow.

Jim,
The photo I posted is from the same fork you have shown. I asked the Seller to send me a better photo for the details.

That fork is probably from the late 1960s maybe even pre 1968. It has a flat top Wagner crown with a long center point. Most TdFs from the Bike Boom era used Nervex crowns in 2-3 different styles.
I arbitrarily use 1968 as the year Gitane switched to the Mylar foil decals that they used until 1974.
The Gitane Route de France frame that I showed the fork from has some interesting Mylar foil decals. The head and seat tube decals look like the later versions but the down tube decal is distinct and resembles earlier stiles. These were probably and interim style from maybe 1967???

No! Not mine.... I should have made it clear in my 2nd message that it was on eBay and coming from France.

If it had a derailleur hanger on the dropout I would be interested,

Very clever. I had to read your post three times to get the pun!
What I do find hard to believe is that no one commented on the Brew 102 can. I remember finding tons of those in the high desert when I was a kid (my dad was building out there). My brother and I collected beer cans, and as it was the cheapest beer you could buy in the Los Angeles area, there were TONS of them in the desert. |

I was in SoCal for a brief period in the early 60s, halfway between LA and SD - when 101 was a 3 lane highway. I seem to recall a local brew called 101 but I haven't found a reference.
There were a dozen brews made there in those days but they all tasted bad!
