DISCLAIMER: I have no involvement with any of these sellers nor am I endorsing their items! Confused

Looking on eBay recently I ran across these new wheels with 700c alloy rims that will fit many older Gitanes.

Most Gitanes up through the late 70s had 5 speed freewheels with 120mm wide rear hubs as measured across the axle locknut flats.

When 6 speed freewheels became popular rear axle widths were increased to 126mm wide.

Later when 7 and 8 speed freewheels plus 7, 8 and 9 speed "freehubs" came out the rear axle widths were increased further to 130mm (same thing for 10 and 11 speeds).

Those of you with 27" steel rims could benefit quite a bit by switching to alloy rims plus there are a lot more choices in 700c tires vs. 27".

Here's one example. I think the seller told me that the hubs were private labeled sealed bearing Sanshine hubs (old Sunshine brand) now made in Taiwan. These wheels ahve 126mm wide rear hubs:

$135 with free US shipping.

Here's another set with a Shimano 6 speed, 126mm wide free hub that a little more expensive:

These wheel appear to be offered on a regular basis.

Good luck and happy riding...

I have a couple of bikes with 27" alloy wheels right now. The local bike shop has a pretty good supply of Bontrager 27" tires which has kept me rolling for now. Very Happy

I would love to switch to the 700c setup but that means also changing out my brakes because there's not currently enough reach to accomodate the smaller 700c diameter. Eventually I'll track down some longer reach brakes and then make the switch.

Forgot to mention that "little" detail... Embarassed

700c wheels are 4mm (~5/32") smaller in diameter than 27" wheels. Some brake calipers may not have enough reach without "minor" modification.
