And fenders on a TdF?

Seeing as how the bike is an hour north of Seattle I get the fenders - not that I agree with it on that bike, though. Get a Gran Sport for the rain.

Jay - great point on the parts. I bought my TdF from a bike mechanic outside of Seattle - all original for $400 18 months ago. Based on the paint condition after I got it home I probably overpaid.

The guy now has a set of Campy Delta brakes listed for $500 ??? I could have bought some Croce d'Aune like these for $175 last year.

Geezzzzzzzzzzz...you live in Portland and don't use fenders? Wink

Jay

Oh, yeah, I'm definitely using fenders,** But I think if I had a TdF, I'd keep it fender-free, for dry-weather use only. Or at most, maybe I'd use something like Race Blades. You know, something in keeping with its race bike heritage.

Exactly.

** I was riding my Lotus Odyssey (with fenders) all summer, but as soon as the rains started and the road got slick, I switched to a fat-tired mountain bike set up as a commuter. LOTS more tire contact with the road surface, with LOTS more stability on the slick roads. It's not as fast, but it keeps me upright.

I agree 100%.

Yeah, yeah, I get it. But theoretically, from May through October (with occasional rain throughout, of course). All this past week, though, we've had absolutely beautiful sunshiney days.

Supposed to rain again tomorrow. Crying or Very sad

I remember seeing a picture of Eddy Merckx riding a PuJo PX-10 team bike with fenders!

I don't know whether he was on a training ride or what but he had them on the bike and he was wearing PuJo colors!

On that note, I'm feeling suicidal today... Cool

And, I'm going to have to check this one out at the swap this weekend - way overpriced, especially with the repaint and mismatched components.

I looked at this TdF twice today. The repaint was ok - metallic blue. But, with the mismatched components, etc. it just didn't do anything for me. There was only one decal for Gitane - on the fork. No other decals had been put on the bike.

New TdF listing on eBay

There a TdF just listed on eBay:

http://tinyurl.com/yjerfo9

"58-cm Gitane Professional Vintage Road Bike Campagnolo"

There's zero Campagnolo on this frame but it's a good example of one that came with the old style thin Simplex dropouts without a derailleur hanger that I'd mentioned above. This was probably due to a shortage of the standard Simplex dropouts.

I'd estimate that it's about a 1972 model because it still has the brazed on brake cable stop bridge on the seat stays but it has the later Nervex DuBois fork crown.

Nervex Professional crown
