Nice looking bike. He's also got quite the list of vintage components as well. |

Hopefully he sells it to someone a little smaller? That seatpost was phenomenally light for it's era and it appears that he has maybe three quarters of an inch worth left in the bike.
Except for the seat that bike is box stock right down to the Argent 10 rims and it looks as if the tubing sticker has "extra-leger" around the borders which should indicate Vitus 980.
It's clearly a 52 as well; there wouldn't be that much head tube on a 50 and besides Gitane didn't make one. |

Thanks for the detail Logarto. I thought it looked good. Top bike too and lovely original condition. I agree about the saddle, definitely not part of the kit but that's easy to change when the rest is as is. Sadly, it's too small for me.
Scott, there is definitely a good range of components there. I had a good look too.

$800? Maybe I should put the original parts back on my frame and sell it! |

The "chevron" decals plus Super Vitus 980 suggest that it's probably a 1982 model but it could be an 81 or 83.
Super Vitus 980 was extremely light tubing and would make a small frame like that a really smooth riding bike.
I recently bought a 1985/85 50cm Professional team replica bike off eBay for $500 plus shipping. It came with a Campy Victory gruppo.
A 50cm 1984 Team Pro frame just sold for a little over $100.
I'd think that your bike is worth closer to $450-$600. Smaller size frames don't sell for as much as say a 55cm to 60cm bike.
If you find someone who really wants that bike then... |

This is a really nice bike. It looks to be very similar to, if not identical, to my former '83 S/C. What is, to me, really interesting is some of the commentary regarding the concept of the velo. Specifically, it was stated that some in the French components industry felt that foreign; i.e. Shimano, Suntour and Campagnolo, were poised to take over said components industry. Therefore, pulling together manufacturers of brakes (Mafac), drivetrain (Stronglight, Simplex), Mavic (wheels) etc., the Speidel Group was created. The new group was applied to all French (Super Vitus 971-983) framesets.
What a break from the past! The 1982 S/C was, of course, one the last of the traditional Reynolds 531/Campagnolo Nuovo Record bikes. I had not heard that version before, but it seems plausible.
Bienvenue,
Peter H. |
