Here's an aluminium frame advertised as a 1988 with Vitus tubing. It doesn't seem to be listed in the '88 catalogues and the rear dropouts are vertical.

poufthecascadeur,
Good thoughts on the 979 there and a nice looking frame. So possibly quite unusual?
Thanks

The decals are incorrectly applied, which is interesting. No way that was ever used by any pro team. |

I am wondering if this was actually an original Gitane, or a redo of some sort. Systeme U (accent missing, this service) certainly never raced this model. The 1987 U.S. Tour de France was a Vitus 979 model. Checking the U.S. catalogue for 1987, we note that this model was silver aluminum in color, with orange trim and a Speidel 6600 group, etc. To my mind, this was a really nice velo, but it was never raced (to the best of my knowledge) by any pro-team. Other versions did, though! The Belgian Histor-Sigma (in 1989-1990) raced on Gitane-Vitus Carbone and steel GTI frames. If I remember correctly, Histor team stalwart Herman Frison won at Ghent, in 1990, on one or another of these velos. That leads to another personal theory on "Gitane team velos (or variations of same) available to enthusiasts"; probably too lengthy for this post.
Bienvenue,
Peter H. |
