Hello - I just picked up a 1972 or '73 TDF (54cm. green in color) and it is needing cables and brake hoods. The original Mafac 1/2 brake hoods are pretty well shot and I was wondering if anyone had a source for these in white. The few that I've seen online seem to run $50 and up. Ouch!!! I will post photos soon... Thanks, John Shocked

Unfortunately, Mafac went out of business in the mid to late 80s (1988?). They haven't been made for over 20 years.

There are some reproduction Campagnolo and Universal brake lever hoods available. Those are much easier to produce than the Mafac 1/2 hoods which have a metal strip embedded in them.

It seems that suddenly there's a growing interest in our French bikes which were sneered at for so long! Mad

A few suggestions:

1. Check around some long established bike shops. They may not have the hoods themselves but might have some old levers with hoods in their junk boxes.

2. Look for an old French clunker bike that may have some usable hoods. You might find a complete bike for $10-$25! Take what you need and sell the rest for $50-$100 to someone looking to build a fixie! Twisted Evil

3. Bite the bullet... Confused

Good luck! Wink

Thanks Chas... I was hoping that perhaps someone had a secret source for these things! I will keep looking. Trying to include photos here. John

You got all my secrets! Confused

Seek and ye shall find! Wink

Nice bike in excellent, beautiful condition. Cool

Looks to be from the early 70s, maybe 1971. It has long point Prugnat lugs, Nervex Professional fork crown, brazed on rear brake cable bridge, and the old style Simplex dropouts without an integral rear derailleur hanger.

The items that place it around that time are the swagged over seat stay tops and Campagnolo Nuovo Tipo hubs instead of Normandy Luxe Competition hubs.

Very pretty bike. HOpe you find those hoods. My recommendation for hard to find parts is usually "Ebay"!
