Hi - I picked this up last year for 20 euros when on holiday in France. Would welcome some info on the make, model, year etc & any tips on restoring the gear changer and front brake cable. Confused

What you have is a standard fare entry level French bike from the early bike boom era, maybe late 60s to early 70s.

Many well known bike racers had bikes made with their names on them. Most never manufactured their bikes but had them produced by large bike makers who specialized in private labeling bikes. That was the case with Anquetil too.

It looks to be in good condition and well worth €20 but not much over €50-€60.

Cleaned up and lubed with new brake and derailleur cables it should make a nice riding bike.

Two things:

1. Get some new brakes or at least brake blocks if you want to stop! Shocked

2. Get a new modern saddle if you want to go! Wink

Yes. You are correct. It may NOT be a Gitane.

Just joined the forum. So, I am late replying on this one. These Jacque Anquetil bikes are rare here in France. But, you can find these from time-to-time even on the street. As someone else indicated many of the former leading rider's names are used on these types of bikes in Europe. I've seen several different names on bikes on the street here in Lyon. The price you paid is what they go for here in France. In the U.S. they would go for a higher price due to the lack of availability. But, nothing high-end about any of these bikes even in France. According to my local sources they were never produced in a higher quality.

As for JA I've only seen one of his bikes (used in the Giro) on display here in France (a Heylet).
