Hello everyone,

First off I would like to mention that I have little knowledge and I am trying to improve that.

I recently purchased a road bike and I am trying to nail down exactly what model it is.

It's a Gitane Vitus 788 frame with Simplex shifters and a Stronglight crank.

The handlebars are ATAX Franco Italia D 352.

Now my research says that ATAX bars were normal for French bikes and I have tried to find additional information even on the Gitane site.

Does anyone know where I could get more information or has any information on this bike?

I will be taking pictures and posting the link as soon as possible...

Thanks in advance,

- Vince

Welcome! The "regulars" on the list here should be able to give you a TON of information. The first thing to do is to post pictures (make sure it is on the "drive side"...the side with the crankset and derailleurs). Can't wait.

Looks like the Grantour model in the 1983 catalog:

http://www.gitaneusa.com/images/catalog/1983_pg3.jpg

Could also be a 1981 or 1982 because of the white outline around the Gitane "G" logo on the head tube. Later years used a yellow outline.

Nice bike...

Looks like thats probably it... too bad the stickers are gone...

Thanks a ton...

Looks like the suggested retail was $369.00...

How much would be a reasonable price be for it nowadays?

Just trying to see if I got a good deal...

Thanks,

- Vince

Well in that case looks like I paid too much...

I guess I should have done more research but it looked nice and clean...

Haven't really done anything to it at all really...

Thanks again...

I think Lofter got his for a steal at $150. The bike is worth more than that.

Well the bike did come with a front bag that I took off since I didn't need it as well as a computer that I didn't need...

I live in Columbus, OH and I was looking around for a while...

Old road bikes were going for like $200 and, in my opinion they all looked like crap... And then this beauty showed up and it was a little on the pricey side and I probably paid more than I should have...

Brace for shock...

It was $400...

The amounts are purely subjective. If you like the bike, it was worth every penny. I and others have paid a lot for bicycles that may not have been "worth" what we paid. Like I said: Value is subjective.

$400 seems just about right for your bike. Decent frame, excellent components all in good condition.

You can spend much more than that for a souless Asian built POS with no character and not have near the bike!

Enjoy

Yep, my '84, bought about 2 or 3 years ago, was somewhere between $100 and $150, I can't remember the exact price now.

BUT....

This '83 is listed for $320, so $400 seems to be in the ballpark. I think the days of good bargains on great vintage bikes are quickly receding into the past.
