Hello anyone knows if that is TDF and about what year is it? head set has some part missing , it has the lock nut, but there is a space between the lock nut and the top race. Must be some washer of sort.
thanks

The frame appears to be from a bike that was parted out. Evil or Very Mad Mad Evil or Very Mad

It was probably a Sprint or Super Sprint model. They only had the 3 main tubes made of Reynolds 531.

The headset could be have been either a standard Gitane or a Stronglight P3. It's most likely metric thread.

Post a closeup of the headset and I can give you more info.

Gitane rarely used Nervar cranks. The only ones I've seen were on a few mid 70s Interclubs that came with the low end 3 arm cast aluminum Nervar cranks. Later in the 80s some models came with different style Nervar cranksets.

I'm not sure that this frame is a Gitane.

1. the seat stay tops... Gitane hasn't used thus style for many years, maybe back in the 60s?

Late 60s TdF ???

1969-early 70s TdF

TdF seat stays from the early to mid 70s.

1976-77

Late 70s early 80s

2. That's a weird headset. Never seen one like it. It's missing the lock ring and spacer.

4. That Reynolds 531 decal shows that the frame is 3 TUBES RENFORCES - only the 3 main tubes are Reynolds 531 tubing.

The decals changed in 1974 so it's likely a pre 1974 frame.

Post 1974 sticker

4. The black pin stripping on top of the lugs rather than in the "shoreline" isn't anything Gitane used.

I've seen that style on other French makes but not Gitane. It could have been something that a former owner or shop did.

It can also be a frame built for a local French shop by one of the many French bike and frame makers of the day.

Seatpost size for butted 531 tubing was 24.6mm. The stem would have been 22.0mm and all the threads metric.

Thank you Chas!
Looking for the head set locking and spacer.
If any one has something that would work.
Thanks

Yes but that's "lug lining" painted in the "shoreline". The black pin-striping is painted on top of the lugs. I've never seen a Gitane with that feature.

A former owner could have done the painting too.

Hi I might have a headset like this. Will have to check. Need to use Simplex derailleur if no threads. Can run threads through for modern derailleur but will be missing the stop/notch that modern derailleurs use. (petty sure) Nothing wrong with Simplex derailleurs
for this type of bike.

Thanks Frenchbuilt, any one has a simplex derailuer that would fit my drop outs? My frame has the drop out adjustment screws, so it can not be the kind that mounts in behind the wheel or with the wheel axle.
By any chance anyone might know, would campy Valentino work? I have one of those...
Thanks all

Could my frame be Jacques Anquetil? found on web similar frame with same style of pin striping and two bands on seat tube (mine has the same, they are gone but you can see the paint is brand new under) and missing circular head badge (same new paint in circle) ? same seat stay caps treatment, but different drop outs (stamped on this bike, mine has a simplex). similar paint scheme.

Could be... Jacques Anquetil bikes were made by a number of French mass bike makers such as Manufrance.

One source on web said some JA bikes were made at some point by Gitane, that would explain the nicer simplex lugs. Interesting hunt for the origin of this frame, thanks all for helping out.
