OK, so sandman was telling us about a poster with Fignon riding a Team Pro that had chrome lugs, or head tube or something.....
I guess Hinault had to go one better, huh?
Or is that aluminium? (as pron in the English language for all you statesiders: al - you - mini - um)

I have seen pictures of that bike before (1983). It is, I believe, steel, not aluminum. I will get some scans together. The interesting thing about it is how tiny the Gitane logo is. I have a picture which shows the head tube, and the Gitane logo is written out in a total sticker which is no more than 1" long! Teenie...I wonder why? |

I looks chrome plated to me too. The aluminum bikes of that era had oversized lugs. The chainstays and seat stays look flat oval.
The wheel sucker behind him is on a steel Peugeot, probably a fairly stock model.
What race was that picture taken? It looks like they are on some pave but they are too clean for the PR. The Gitane appears to have very relaxed angles.

Yeah, I think it's chrome plated steel too. Look at the seat stays. Fastback style where they join the seat lug - not usually a gitane trait. What's with the worn out whitw turbo saddle? Sorry the scan isn't so great. The road is definitely tarmac. Not sure what race, the story was a preview for the 83 Tour (July edition). Hinault won 2 classics that year, the Pino Cerami GP and Fleche Wallonne. Perhaps it's one of those?
The steel peugeots of 83 were painted white as is shown on the next page of the magazine - you'll have to take my word for it. That is the early carbon job that the big fella is riding. (again, there are other pics that show it better). Who is that wheelsucker, anyway? Some unknown american I'll bet. |

The small picture has some pixelation that makes it look like pave but the blowup is definitely Macadam. |

I think the wheel sucker is Phil Anderson on a Peugeot. You maybe able to cross reference to find the race.
Cheers.

Hinault used the same "chromed" Gitane bike in the 1983 Fleche-Wallone. The weather was bad, so he also used the rubberized Renault elf jersey which looks great in the pics. |

Looks like Phil's bike might have the sliver Mavic group like Hinault's dark grey version. Has the right Simplex shifters at least. Would Peugeot have been putting Mavic on race bikes in 83? Could also be a S. Record group with the common substitution of Simplex shifters, but it seems less likely to be Campag since it's on a Peugeot (?).

Yeah, that's definitely the same bike. Given that Hinault wears a helmet, I'd say it's taken from a belgian race (were you had to wear a helmet)...maybe liege bastogne liege but I'm not sure he finished this one ? |

ack! Here's another one! Check out No. 68's bike. Chrome or alu?
The seat tube looks suspiciously black...........
Maybe they experimented with the competition's new fnagled carbon bikes?

Also looks like the down tube is possibly black (carbon) if you look at the edge of the bb shell/dt junction, just under the front QR in that photo. The fork hides most of the dt but that black edge at the bb is pretty clear. The top tube could also be black (carbon) with the reflection on the tt masking that to some degree. I do remember that, it seemed, almost as soon as bonded lug aluminium bikes hit the market there were bonded lug aluminium bikes with black carbon in the three main tubes.
Is that Stephen Roche for Redout behind #68 and to the left?
Also a pleasure to be reminded of Redout riding Motobecane.

Maybe one of the early manufacturers was happy to provide frames to the big brands for a while in the early to mid 80's. Like TVT in the late 80's. They did bikes for Look, Pinarello, Villenger & LeMond to name just a few.
Yep, that's a young Roche. Also look for young Mottet, young Rooks, young Caritoux, and Winnen and........ |
