Yes, I saw it late last night...
Great provenance (provenance, meaning the documented history of an antique or historical object)
"My recollection is that I was able to purchase this bottle from someone who had purchased this from someone connected to one of the Renault / ELF sponsored Gitanes team support vans..."
Yes and "George Washington slept here", "this once belonged to Abraham Lincoln" and I have a nice bridge in Brooklyn for sale...

pistol13,
I've seen original 1950's to to 1930's water bottles go for the same money and much more. I'd say the price is very high indeed.
Here's a super collection of many ex team water bottles, possibly all;
http://www.velocollection.fr/index.php?rang=2
Take a look at the 'avant 1996' selection, here;
http://www.velocollection.fr/pages/avant1996.htm
You'll see that within the avant 1996 area there are a few Renault Gitane bottles although not '70s as described in the ad. or similar to the shape of the item, but then that detail is pretty vague to a buyer.

I have never seen that bottle used in any Renault/Gitane team photo...and I have looked at a crap-load of Renault/Gitane team photos. That isn't to say that it wasn't used or the claims made by the seller aren't legitimate, but I have my doubts as to the authenticity of that bottle. Many producers made "team" knock-offs. I had a Systeme U one myself.... |

Many, many bottles were made for publicity, marketing and sales purposes outside those for the team, and there were differences. Very hard to tell them apart sometimes.

During professional races, riders quite frequently discarded their plastic H20 bottles along the way. A lot of lucky spectators have been the fortunate recipients of these bottles over the years.

Chas,
It does indeed happen. I was fortunate, I have a Coca Cola water bottle from the 1994 Tour de France that was discarded by a rider, from a group, riding south out of Malaucène, after having climbed and descended Mont Ventoux, chasing Eros Poli to Carpentras.

Think about it, what's on those water bottles - advertising - company names and logos! What do most commercially packaged liquids come in, plastic bottles!
Plastic H2O bottles were/are a cheap form of advertising. Advertisers wanted their names spread around and providing teams with large quantities of cheap to produce water bottles was one way of doing it.
BIC H2O bottles were ubiquitous!
Cyclists pay exorbitant amounts for plastic bottles covered with advertising that cost cents/pence/centimes etc. to produce!
Check out this link:

Note prices have increased drastically due to recent extortions by the worldwide oil industry.

I've had my share of Renault Gitane bottles back in the 80's and none of them looked like that.
I'm not saying it's not genuine. I'm just sayong it's not the most commonly used bottle of this era. Maybe that's why it's rare & expensive.
Looks to be in great condition, though. |

Superb Stephan, it must have been a terrific feeling winning that title. Congratulations.

Wisey...my voice would be a few octaves higher if I rode your bikes.
FYI: It was a 2004 Gitane "Airplane". Not to toot my own horn, as I am now fat and out of shape, here is the bike and a pic of me winning!
